DLMag: VIA Chipsets Not Windows Compatible?
The flaw became apparent during the E7 review, in which the Carrypad Journal noted that the CPU was hard at work during DVB-T and DVD playback. Both formats use the MPEG-2 movie format, for which the VIA chipset is supposed to provide hardware decoding which shouldn't require the CPU for operation. When it was shown that the hardware decoding wasn't working as it should, further investigation showed that only two Windows DVD players supported VIA's MPEG-2 hardware decoding: PowerDVD and WinDVD. This indicates the the SDKs to support such features isn't as readily available to software companies as it should be. Adding insult to injury, Linux support is much better, with several distributions (most notably, Epios) supporting the VIA chipset and most of its hardware features. It has been indicated the Linux has been receiving support directly from VIA to make sure these features all work. This is a bit of a switch from the norm; usually a company with support Windows and provide only minimal support for Linux, whereas the reverse is true here.Read More
